Joseph Ruthenberg trained as a helicopter pilot in Pensacola, Florida, served in the Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, and went on a Mediterranean cruise during the 1973 war in Israel. He later flew with the Presidential Helicopter Squadron and was involved in an incident where a science project rocket narrowly missed his helicopter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
